Is Borderline IQ Genetic? — The Heritability of Intelligence Debate
"Parents' fault or environment's?" — Between scientific evidence and ethical pitfalls
"Is being less intelligent the parents' fault?" — a question that's extremely hard to answer scientifically and ethically dangerous.
What Is Heritability?
First, a common misconception must be cleared.
Heritability of 80% does NOT mean: "80% of an individual's intelligence is genetically determined." Heritability is the proportion of variance in intelligence differences within a population explained by genetic factors.
Simply put: when people differ in IQ, about 50-80% of that difference is explained by genetic differences. This is different from asking how much of one person's IQ is determined by genes.
Why This Distinction Matters
Heritability increases as environment becomes more uniform. In a society where everyone gets the same education and nutrition, most remaining differences are genetic. Conversely, in societies with large environmental gaps, heritability decreases — because environment creates more of the difference.
Is Borderline IQ Inherited?
"Genetic influence exists" (Research evidence)
Twin studies: Identical twin IQ correlation (0.85-0.90) is much higher than fraternal twins (0.60)
Adoption studies: Adopted children's IQ tends to approach biological parents' IQ rather than adoptive parents' (especially in adulthood)
GWAS: Thousands of gene variants each contribute tiny effects, collectively influencing intelligence
So yes, if parents have borderline IQ, children have higher probability than the general population.
"Genetics isn't everything" (Environment's role)
But genetic influence doesn't mean "unchangeable."
Flynn Effect: IQ scores rose ~3 points per generation throughout the 20th century — due to environment (education, nutrition, health), not genetic change
Nutritional deficiency: Prenatal/infant deficiency (iodine, iron, folic acid) significantly lowers IQ
Lead exposure: Childhood lead exposure can lower IQ by up to 7 points
Early education: Programs like Perry Preschool show short-term IQ gains and long-term positive effects on crime rates and income
Why This Debate Is Dangerous
"Intelligence is genetic" has historically been linked to eugenics — forced sterilization in early 20th century US/Europe, Nazi euthanasia programs (T4), and racist claims about "low-IQ races."
Modern genetics clearly rejects such interpretations. Heritability doesn't mean "unchangeable" — it means the proportion genetics explains under current environmental conditions. Change the environment, change the outcome.
Core Point
"Genetic influence exists" and "it can't be changed" are completely different claims. Height has ~80% heritability too, yet average height keeps increasing with better nutrition. Intelligence works the same way.
Heritability Trap — Common Misconceptions
"80% heritability means 80% of my IQ is genetic" — Wrong. Heritability is the proportion of population variance explained by genetics, not individual determination.
"High heritability means unchangeable" — Wrong. Height is 80% heritable yet average height keeps increasing with better nutrition.
Correct interpretation: "Under current environmental conditions, ~50-80% of IQ differences between people are explained by genetics. Change the environment, change this ratio."
Debate Points
Intelligence heritability ~50-80% — but NOT "80% of individual's IQ is genetic"
Twin/adoption studies confirm genetic influence — children of BIF parents have higher probability
Flynn Effect: IQ rose ~3 points/generation in 20th century — proves environment's impact
Nutrition, lead exposure, early education can change IQ — "genetic ≠ unchangeable"
Core: "genetic influence" ≠ "unchangeable" — height is 80% heritable yet keeps increasing
Pros
- ✓ Twin studies show IQ correlation: identical (0.85) >> fraternal (0.60) — clear genetic influence
- ✓ Adoption studies show children's IQ converges toward biological parents
- ✓ GWAS confirms thousands of gene variants each contribute small effects to intelligence
Cons
- ✗ Flynn Effect: 20th century IQ rose ~3pts/generation — environmental not genetic change
- ✗ Removing nutritional deficiency and lead exposure alone significantly raises IQ
- ✗ Heritability increases as environment becomes uniform — decreases with large environmental gaps
